Short Story
Wham.
"Argh!" A young boy, who looked more scraggily-looking than ever, shouted as he connected with a tree. Gritting his teeth and holding back the curses that formed on his wrist, he pulled off a pair of bright green sunglasses he had been wearing and looked at his arm.
'Dammit, another bruise...' Onni thought to himself, wincing in pain as he touched where the force of his impact had centered in his body. He took a deep breath, taking a step back.
It seemed to be almost second nature now, this had to have been the dozen or so time he'd done it - standing back, his body almost took on a natural focus of its own, before he put the glasses back on. The glasses channeled the energy he knew was connected between him and his partner, his mentor, Nomura-sensei. The beige armor once again formed around him, covering his entire body as he once again assumed the form of Gigantech Fighter.
Rushing at his opponents - the trees in the park, old enough that they could withstand immense abuse through his training. This wasn't strength training, it was combat and agility and endurance... and he was on the clock.
"In seven days, the world will end."
'Like hell it will!' Onni thought on revisiting these memories, moving as fast as he could to suddenly attack a tree to his right. The combat had helped focus Onni, and the attack connected, but Onni bit down the urge to curse again.
'Still too slow. Still too predictable.'
But he knew he was getting better. Even if all he was focusing on were trees, he could feel the armor feel more natural, could feel it being less encumbersome... he was starting to feel it working to his advantage, the natural strength and extra agility it provided, but it was still slower than his unarmored speed.
He twisted and did a spinning back kick to annother tree.
Thoughts soon came flooding back to him. The delusional rants, the hearing of footsteps. The punches and kicks, getting hit by a taser and pushing themm both to the ground... he had hurt them both. He had made them lose his trust in him. He had paid a price for falling, but even hitting rock bottom had its merits. What had happened changed him, and not just in the way that was obvious to him - seeing the images of Duel Spirits, sometimes overlaying humans, sometimes on their own - but it had let loose emotions Onni hadn't desired to face. Thoughts he had wanted to put away... Everything to how he was treated on a daily basis to the dissapearance of Hoshi. Those had broken free and.. admittedly, cleared his mind as he had reached the point of sanity.
As his thoughts kept going through his mind, Onni's movements became faster, more natural, more forceful as he focused not on the combat, but on himself. His emmotions, his thoughts, his conscious, focused mind were all feeding into his training now, as he spun wildly and attacked the trees near him with feirce barrages. Onni could feel something in him, something he had felt before while he was training, but it was back. It was a surge of... something. His movements were slower to him, but near blurring as he struck trees. His movements were anyone's guess, frenzied attacks on the trees as he felt it build slightly...
But as he spun into a full-on punch towards a tree, he could feel the surge of energy falter and the armor around him dissolve in a fraction of a second as he struck the tree with his bare fist. He winced as he thought he could hear his knuckles crack in the impact.
"Gh...!"
He dropped to the ground, clutching his hand. He moves each of his fingers, they stung, but they moved. "God dammit..."
He stood up shakingly, got back into a focused stance, an blotted out the pain.
"I'm weak... but I won't give up! Never!"
Then he dove at the tree once more.
