I guess I can tell you that they're sort of like.. spirits of the person themselves.

Like the true form of the Ka. They're probably being awoken in people with something.. probably something with an edge.

Check the hospital. You'll find a bunch of people who have bad fevers and aren't getting any better. They probably got shot with it but didn't have the spiritual strength to form a spirit.
