becomeanwarrior: (Don't got a good feeling about this...)
So, 'Riko, whatever weird eldritch magic permeates your house, I think it finally caught up to me on my last trip over. I had to take a whole new set of pictures, even. Some of those were -really- old, too. Gonna kinda miss 'em.

Shiroko, please don't lock me out of the house because I look like someone replaced me with an alien doppleganger, or something.
[ So those of you paying attention to the news this morning might have noticed a story: "Private Security Director Condemns Anti-Spirit Actions" - news about a press conference held by OOPARTS Joint Security Firm - with Onni as cleaned up as he gets. Soundbites from the conference were probably played over the course of the day-

"My team and I are dedicated not just to protecting people from supernatural threats, but protecting the supernatural from human threats. Mr. Tsuyoshi's actions were not just inexcusable within the confines of the Action Duel World Championships, but also to me, personally, as someone working to constantly bridge the gap between Spirits and Humans. While diplomacy is the purview of my colleague and friend Mr. Yuuki and the Spirit-Arcadia Institute, it's up to us to make sure that in situations like this, we keep violent outbursts like Mr. Tsuyoshi's as isolated an incident as possible."

Beyond that, it's accompanied by the usual media gossip. Mostly this being Onni's first 'official' public appearance as Director of OOPARTs, and since the "freak accident" on the set of a movie shoot which left him hospitalized for several weeks - which was quickly followed by a vacation shortly after the appearance of the 'Mystery Island'. Not counting the fact that he revealed himself during the Action Duel World Championship as the mysterious "Kamnen Shinshi" - and placed Top 4 before being eliminated by Juudai.
]

Well, that press conference could have gone worse, I suppose. One day I'll get used to media appearances.

[Private OOPARTS Security Filter]

Alright, I think that things have calmed down from the moment, but we have a fair amount to investigate, I think - namely, I want to know who put these ideas into Mr. Tsuyoshi's head.

There's also a few other avenues I think we can explore privately on some other leads, maybe make some headway in all directions. I can think of... a few things, anyway.

If anyone has anything they want to bring up, feel free to speak up.

[Event]

[ The third floor of the OOPARTs Building is reserved mostly for administrative efforts - some of the Twelve Peers are up here, having moved to record-keeping duty after the move to OOPARTS.

However, the biggest room is, without doubt, the Director's - that is to say, Onni's - office. A huge screen on the back wall, behind his desk - which, while shiny and new, is already in its usual disarray, as he's working on something or other - small machines, right now. Hobbyist enthusiasts. There are a number of scattered blueprints, incident reports, and to-do-lists that strewn about the desk.

Onni's office, for all it's stature, has an 'open door' policy. If you wished to talk to him - either because he called you here himself or because you need to talk with him, he's here.

[DUEL LOG: "MASKED GENTLEMAN" ONNI VS JUUDAI]

...I completely forgot Ehther can summon chain Mega Zaborg and Erebus and not just the base Monarchs! AUGH. I'm an idiot.

That's what I get for cramming deck theory for a whole new deck like a month before the tournament!

Still...nothin' wrong with top 4.
So I uh. May need to get myself a new phone.

It turns out this one isn't up to... let's call it 'extenuating stressors'.

...Marias, how you holding up?
Action Dueling World Championships, huh.

I'm almost kind of sad I never really got too deep into the pro scene. That looks like a wild ride.

I imagine OOPARTS will probably be busy making sure the city's not going to explode like during the WRGP fiasco, though, so I'll probably be managing that. Plus, I think I just want to keep relaxing since I don't think the vacation quite... did the job.

Maybe I -should- get a mini-golf set for the new office. Or something I can work on in my spare time now that Jean's head of R&D. I dunno.

Either way, though, I'll be rooting for you all out there.
Ah, it's finally happened. The end of my youthful appearance.

Grey hairs.

Suppose I should have seen this coming.
[LOG: ONNI VS ALEX, be sure to read this thread for context!]

I think I can finally start posting to here again. We're still quite a bit ways from the happy ending, but. Well. It seems like a lot of the political types are accepting that even if they want to maneuver around us, they don't know even a tenth of what Juudai and I know about this supernatural stuff, which means we're given quite a fair bit of leverage. For now, anyway.

Now if only that didn't mean mountains of paperwork. Between this and finalization on the building OOPARTS will be in, I've hardly had a moment to myself. Luckily, it's... starting to cool down.

[Private to SAI, OOPARTS, and The Five Signers/Their Dragons (also forwarded to the Barians)]

...If anyone is sees Alexandra Grant, she's to be considered extremely dangerous, and stopped if at all possible. I'm. A little embarrassed to admit this information is coming to you guys late. The circumstances of which this occurred happened in the midst of the Barian Island media blackout. But Alex is currently an extremely high-level threat, planning on attacking and, if possible, killing the Astrals.

All of them.

[Private to Susan DeRay]

...Susan, I've gotta talk to you.
Monthly check-up today. Good news, docs have said I can start walking around again. Even given me some outside time. Bbbbad news is that I've still probably got another few weeks before they release me with a mostly clean bill of health. They did say I seem to be recovering pretty quickly given the circumstances, at least.

I even missed my own birthday. What a friggin' waste of the ol- two-five, huh.

Good news is I've had a lot of time to start actually working on some plans for things going forward, so once that's done I can actually move forward, for once.

Anyway, I've exhaused all the channels this TV has to offer. What's been up with you guys lately?

[EVENT POST]

[A general catch-all if you want to bug Onni either a) in his hospital room, or b) in the Park just outside Domino General Hospital. He seems in better spirits, at least. Though he still seems to be moving stiffly - and walking outside has him leaning heavily on a cane.]

[A TV is on in a hospital room, a newsfeed reporting as the news scrolls on by.

"Construction crews continue to cooperate with the Domino Police and Fire Department in clearing and investigating the destruction of the Domino Police Special Investigations building. The building was attacked by a terrorist attempting to work against the Special Investigations Department. Chief of Investigations Haita Onni is reported to be in critical but stable condition after a 17-hour surgery to reconstruct his chest cavity after an attack. Currently Acting Chief Investigator Mikata Niyo declined to comment..."

[He's restrained in bed. Barely conscious. Hooked up to a couple vital-monitoring machines and a whole lot of painkillers. Off to a table is the two things recovered with him, his duel disk - practically snapped in two from the force of the explosion, and a deck of cards, slightly burnt at the edges.]

[But he is alive. And the hospital is letting friends, family, and associates come see him, today. Though, with how he seems to be fading in and out of consciousness, you may need some effort to keep him awake.]
Agent Kaito severely injured, requesting pickup at coordinates.

[LOCATION PING]

Bomber identified ass Wakahisa, Moeko, more hostages suspected, moving to intercept.
[Filtered from the hijack crashing the network.]

I'm ordering a full evacuation of the offices, effective immediately. Get anything you think is important out, but no dilly-dallying, lives are at stake here.

When done, we're splitting up into Civilian Protection and Asset Protection duty. This fucker's after the Numbers, so anyone holding onto any in SpecInv should explicitly hold onto them.

I've set the Twelve Peers to start zoning people away from Sakana, SpecInv, and SAI. Hopefully that keeps everyone else at bay. Anyone who thinks they have the ability to sniff out and search for the explosives - meet up with one of Isabel Marias' groups.

Izumi. I sent a file to you marked "Mecknight Project Handling Instructions", I suggest you read it, just in case. I'm giving you Emergency Clearance.

Jean, back up any projects you've been working on to the remote server - you should have access, and then get -out-. We don't have time to salvage all the work there, I'm afraid.

Niyo, I'm working on moving our databeses and the Ame-no-Nuhoko, I need you to take charge while I'm taking care of this. Do whatever you need to do, but this is about minimalizing risk, not going after the fucker. Yet.

[Private to Shikou]

I can't find Shiroko.
[Private To: The Numbers Club, the Number Hunters, SpecInv, SAI, Black Velvet Security, as well as Koyo/Kai, The Signers, Aegis + Achilleshield, And Anyone Else Connected To The Barian Case]

Sorry for the radio silence, everyone. I've been trying to compile this into a form that everyone should find easily digestible, as I've been talking with Agent Kaito and we have tried to put together the clues we have now. We have some missing pieces of the puzzle, still, but we've got some pretty educated guesses about everything, now. It should be noted, as Agent Kaito has been so keen to reiterate several times, simply knowing any of this information is likely considered criminal in the eyes of the Greater 12 Dimensions, due to the breach in security and classified information. Me? I don't give a damn at this point.

Let's see if I can keep this... more or less succinct.

On the Relationship Between the Barians and the Astrals

Now, bear in mind, this is mostly what I can guess at from what I know here. Aegis, Achilles, if you two want to correct any details here that you recall as being different, please feel free to jump on here.

We've never seen the Astrals, near as my records are sure of, but as many might be aware of, we're now cooperating with the Barians as best as we can. However, there's a clear relationship between the two, and incident in the Antarctic, as well as the source that confirmed the details of Number 6, implied that they may have once been one in the same. To that end, I believe the best guess is that a schism happened when the ones we know as 'Astrals' wanted to ascend to a higher, more advanced evolutionary state through 'Ranking Up'. They likely acquired this from Cosmo Queen, considered the progenitor of the dangerous 'Rank-Up-Magic', though that's almost impossible to confirm at this time. It's believed that they desired to use Ettosyleit - The Warp, as it's known in our tongue, and harness the chaotic energies omnipresent there to advance their desires to Rank Up.

The Barians, meanwhile, seem to be the ones who dissented from this idea of using Rank Up, and the Astralss eventually came to resent and hate them, considering them much more beneath them for this. Tensions escalate, and that's how we get here - all the fighting for their lives has practically destroyed the Barians' world. This brings me to my next point...

The 'Chronomaly' Number Series and the Ame-No-Nuhoko

A little while back, myself, Juudai, and Agent Kaito met to discuss the release of several of the Captured Numbers who's records were clearly more dangerous (Number 10: Illumiknight, Number 11: Big Eye) or whose status was that of a superweapon (Number 9: Dyson Sphere). Of these, we handed over a series of nested machines that culminated in Number 6: Chronomaly Atlandis, as their records were supiciously classified, similar to Dark Mist, Hope, Galaxy-Eyes Prime, etc etc.

After some examination and research by Agent Kaito, we've learned that the Chronomaly series is Astral-related, a machine that has the ability to open wormholes to different points in time and space. It's suspected that the reason the Astral and possibly Barian worls are in the Warp now is because of the power of Number 6. Unfortunately, it seems operating Atlandis is something neither of us knows how to quite accomplish, just yet. Which brings me to the Ame-No-Nuhoko.

Created by the Bujins before their still-unclear demise, the Ame-No-Nuhoko was able to- with some testing, transport myself and Adam Van Der Aart into the Warp. While I would -not- repeat this experiment, I would say that it seems likely that it could repeat this feat the other way, being able to move things from the Warp to regular space. We're still figuring out exactly how it connects to everything - there's a chance that it could work in concert with Atlandis, if we could get the two to communicate. I believe this is the best chance we have of saving the Barians' world, though the spear itself appears to be missing something, and I'm still not sure what. Van Der Aart, if you and Power Tool could look at the spear further whenever you get a moment, I'd appreciate it greatly. As I've been told if anyone could figure out the details, it'd be them.

On the Numbers, Legendary Numbers, and Judgeman

Alright, here's where things start to get a bit more... strange. As was seen in the Antarctic, the Legendary Numbers may or may not be more than just what they appear to be - they might also be archives of data - encrypted data, but data nonetheless. This brings me to a point that... may or may not be something many of the Numbers want to deal with -

They're just as much data as the Legendary Numbers. Maybe not full archives, but. Agent Kaito and I both believe that the system may have been using its inmates as effective hidden data storage. We aren't entirely sure this is the case, but we have some supporting ideas. Agent Kaito's assistant and fellow operative, Orbital 7, is willing to attempt to examine the Numbers we've already relinquished to him to order to see if there's a string of connected data.

...Exactly what connects the Numbers and Legendary Numbers to the 'Over-Hundred Numbers' remains unknown. We suspect whatever data may be on the Numbers may help us, but we lack a decryption key. We suspect that Number 66: Master Key Beetle may, appropriately enough, have the key to the data, but we don't know who has it, currently, as last I had seen, it had vanished from my brother-in-law Jouji's possession after a No Contest.

This may also explain further actions by Judgeman, who's been encouraging Kaito to take the Numbers in as great a number as possible and with an undue amount of force - culminating in attacking Juudai. Naturally, the Agent has refused to comply, and feels that Judgeman is attempting to get him out of the way for knowing too much, so to speak. I think it's enough to still claim that the Judge is, either wittingly or unwittingly working for the Astrals in some fashion, but we still have no 'smoking gun' that proves his corrupt nature to a 12 Dimensions Court, as decisive evidence is required.

...So, that's where we stand right now, some loose ends-

Wakahisa, Moeko: Currently being held captive by the 12 Dimensions, for collaborating with Number 96: Dark Mist. Currently, Agent Kaito's unable to get confirmation on her whereabouts, which to me is a huge red flag.

Number 96: Dark Mist: Is currently still on the run, having last been seen hurtling through the Warp, possessing the body of Bujinki Amaterasu. It should be remembered that the Rogue Barian known as Caduceus has claimed to be the creator of Dark Mist - likely using the Demons, given that Dark Mist seems more like a Demon than either an Astral or Barian. Dark Mist had mentioned wanting to meet their creator at last encounter, so I'd be on alert, here.

The Demons of the Warp: Currently fighting each other due to the power vaccuum left by the heads coming here and getting themselves destroyed, and fighting over the corpse of 'Anti-Hope', the monster that was drive back by myself, Yuma, Alexandra, and Labrys. They seem to be more or less leaving us alone, but any demon that gets a hold of even the smallest fragments of Anti-Hope could become that much more dangerous.

With this, I think the picture becomes much clearer, but I admit there are gaps even for my knowledge here, but that said... that doesn't, necessarily that we should be hasty with this knowledge - if Judgeman -is- trying to get the data back by any means possible, then if he knew that we'd known so much already, he'd likely be Ice-9ing the planet already.

Hopefully, this allows us to come together as a group to draw connections, as well. But, uh, I'm gonna be honest. I've downed like, three cups of Machine World Blend Coffee while I've been working on this, so please feel free to talk about it among yourselves while I go dunk my head in an ice-cold vat of water before I come back to look at this or I'm gonna end up vibrating myself through the floor.

[Like most of the time, these days, the officer of the Special Investigations department is trying to keep his and Niyo's fledgling crew above water - there's a large stack of paperwork on his deck, alongside some discarded machinery - idle distractions, to keep his mind sharp on what he has to do. There's schematics on the wall, scribbled over numerous times. The paperwork is sorted into a few piles -a good size of them contract negotiations with the police, and business filings that have yet to be fully filled out and process.

However, today, unlike others, he's at least mildly expecting company, so some of the more... personal documents have been tucked away. At this point, it's a matter of waiting to see that they show.
]
I'm back in town. Not for... very long, I've got a lot of work to do, but I can stop by and make the rounds before I do anything too nuts.

Van Der Aart, we should talk. I've got some info that collaborates with our... excursion.

Niyo - we may need to get back in touch with Mobius, ASAP.

[Event]

[So you may be at the SpecInv Offices. Where some shit is going down.

And by 'some shit', Onni has a massive spear laid out on a worktable, humminh and hawing over it, taking notes, and overall just being very concerned.
]
For anyone who is interested, I'm going to be busy, and likely out of town for the next couple days. SpecInv should still be running at full capacity, any concerns and calls for assistance should be forwarded to Miss Mikata. She'll be able to get a hold of me if it's an emergency.

Shiroko also has my number, should that be a bit too... clinical.

[Private to Adam Van Der Aart/Onee]

I'm gonna be making some house calls, and then I'm ready to go on this trek whenever you are.

[Private Event]

[He's standing outside a door on the Island, the Duel Academy's faculty housing. He has a small care package of baked goodies and various board games. He lets out a breath.]

Here goes.

[And he's knocking.]
As of this evening, the situation concerning one "Yamada, Mamoru" has been resolved.

Paramedics and Domino Police officers responded shortly after an anonymous tip was left sighting Yamada in the Domino Shopping District. When they got there, they found that Mr. Yamada was out cold in the middle of the street. Special Investigations responded shortly thereafter to assess the scene and collect evidence of what happened from there, while Police roped off the area and Paramedics attended to Mr. Yamada.

From what it looks like, there we no further injuries once Mr. Yamada entered town. Mr. Yamada himself is being treated, and is currently listed in good condition; he should be released within the next few days, pending police cooperation.

We at Special Investigations are glad that the situation was resolved peacefully - though there's no telling exactly what may have been the caused Mr. Yamada's sudden manic state, we remain committed to investigating further into this matter.

[Event]

[Obviously, that's not the full story.

Onni's at SpecInv, looking at a desk with a bunch of photos and bags spread out across it, wearing a pair of slacks, a dress shirt, and nursing a still-steaming cup of coffee.

His brows are furrowed, and he appears rather frustrated.
]
As Yuma has noted, the demons are no longer a problem. All seemingly three existent demons + one aberration, 'Anti-Hope' have been defeated and sent back to whence they came.

Let's keep this shorter than the last summary, key points are - a new person of interest, Labrys. Some connection to Artifacts? Gave Yuma 'Limited Barian's Force' to use during a duel. Her motives are unclear, but she was working with us to dispatch the demons, so if nothing else she's on our good side right now. Seems to seeking 'Legendary Numbers', though. Which could mean any number of good or bad things.

Dark Mist is alive. Still. The fragment that had been seemingly benign in 'Bujinki Amaterasu' had assumed control and lead to Anti-Hope nearly getting out. Escaped into the Immaterium during the ensuing fight. I accept personal responsibility for this one - I should have acted on my hunches long before that was going to be an issue. They said they were going to see their 'creator', and give them 'information', but who and what that is I wasn't able to get anything about.

The 'Immaterium' is, put simply, a bed of chaotic souls that exists in between dimensions. Yes, it sounds like something straight out of Warhammer 40k. It kind of is. The Demons and Dark Mist and Anti-Hope all came from there, of that we can now factually prove. How that connects to any other subject is up for debate, but given the rather classified nature of the Immaterium, I wouldn't be surprised if it's being invoked for something nasty, which might be how the Demons got through in the first place? That's just a guess, though.

I'm very exhausted, but I'm here for questions and follow-up as need be, but I have fill out some paperwork regarding flights.

[OPEN EVENT]

[So, at the park, or a cafe, or maybe the SpecInv offices, you might find Onni, he's sitting down and staring at a card at the bottom of his deck, kind of scratching his head and sighing. He seems very tired.]
Stupid, stupid, stupid me! I should have realized!

It's called a Chaos Draw cause that's where they come from!

Ettosyleit - The Immaterium, in our language - it's the boundless realm of chaos between all worlds! They literally come from Chaos, and draw upon it to warp our world!

That must be how it connects to what might have been left of Dark Mist - Dark Mist must have come from the same soup of chaos they did!

And... if that's the case... is Judgeman trying to tap into the Immaterium? Is that what's going on there?

There's still not enough answers, but - if the Immaterium is the source of all of this, then that's a problem. A big problem.

...And that loudmouth said 'Noah' is coming... who the hell is that?
[The following message is private to the investigative types/teams that are working right now. Signers, Noriko & her Security Force, SpecInv, SAI, etc. It is also being forwarded to Alex and Yuma. They can't contribute to the conversation as it's happening, but they can at least see the discussions. Desdemona also obviously has access to this conversation, despite being hospitalized.]

Alright, it's time for me to show the web I've been working on, now that I have a clear lead. More heads on this, the better.

Ettosyleit - This is what connects everything. It's a place, specifically, it's apparently the place these 'Demons' come from, since one of them mentioned it to Yuma-kun. What it is exactly and where it's located is a bit harder to exactly place - we don't have good leads. The other lead I've got on it is the 'The brighter the light, the greater the shadow cast from it'. Which, on its own, sounds like either some form of corruption, or a 'dark reflection'. Your own shadow brought to arms against you. This is important, because...

Dark Mist - Presumed dead, possibly may not be, I've got some theories on this one. But one thing I think is coming to light - Dark Mist may be from Ettosyleit, as well. It's a strong possibility, especially since Yuma-kun confirmed that the demons can do what we thought was limited to Dark Mist - Chaos Draw. Now... I have a theory that Dark Mist isn't dead. I don't have much to back this up, other than, apparently, all of Dark Mist's 'shards', fragments of itself it leaves in its victims, must be destroyed. However, there is at least one fragment that still exists out there, but does not have Dark Mist's mind attached to it. Thus, I feel like another shard we don't know of is out there, trying to coordinate the others to some end. You're free to argue against that.

The Numeral Hunters - Connected to Ettosyleit through Dark Mist, since Dark Mist is both something from Ettosyleit and Number 96. There equipment may also have some relation to it, but that's spitball theorycrafting, as I was given a hint that Ettosyleit might be why the 'old group' of Number Hunter are no longer existent.

Rank-Up-Magic - Tenuous, but even so, it's there. Dark Mist was able to use Rank-Up-Magic Inner Demon's Force to provoke people even further. Rank-Up-Magic Barian's Force, which has been seen in a few cases, seems to have similar abilities - to 'Evolve' a Number and cause the Number and the person possessing them, regardless of whether or not they were operating well in tandem or not, to get aggressive and possibly even malicious. Is Rank-Up-Magic connected directly to Ettosyleit? I'm not sure. It doesn't quite fit, but I'm not sure what the other options are.

The Message - Who sent it? We haven't been able to trace the message back to an original signal, to my knowledge, and whoever sent it already knows about Ettosyleit and the Demons. They don't want to be known, which makes me suspect they have their own motives. They could be connected to the Rank-Up-Magic Barian's Force we've been seeing, they could be connected to something else entirely. We just don't have enough info on that.

The "Draws" - Yuma can 'Shining Draw', the Demons and Dark Mist can 'Chaos Draw', and presumably there are other ways to pull off this technique - a perfect escape, a perfect trump. Call it what you will, it's a very strange ability that seems to be connected to everything here. Figuring out why might be a first step.

Judgeman - The man behind at least one of the Numeral Hunters, working to find Dark Mist and the other Numbers and reclaim them by any means necessary. I think it's well enough agreed upon that Judgeman is hiding something to give him an excuse to run roughshod over us, and that personally pisses me off, but on a investigation level, he might know exactly why the Numeral Hunters have a connection to Ettosyleit.

...That's the majority of what I have right now. I'm still working on the exact leads. But everything going on connects to everything else. Feel free to discuss and debate on these points. They aren't perfect, but I figure that's a good enough launching point.
Short Story - The Detective's Burdens )

[Post]

As a general note to everyone - please remain cautious when going out at night. As you are no doubt aware, a string of suspected supernatural attacks have recently struck the city of Domino. I advise everyone to find someone you can partner with at all times, should you need to go out at night, and keep emergency services on speed-dial. Should you believe there to be a supernatural disturbance or an attack in your area, the Special Investigations extension of the Domino Police hotline is [XXXX].

If, however, any graduates of Duel Academy wish to perhaps have a passing interest in Law Enforcement or Criminal Technologies, Special Investigations is always looking for younger types who might have a keen eye on helping quell rather unnatural crimes and goings-on, and has internship programs available for post-graduates.

...Good luck on your finals, everyone.

[General Event]

[If you want to harass the Chief of Special Investigations, he's probably running back and forth in the station all day, touching up equipment in his spare time, but mostly reading patrol reports from the Twelve Peers System and trying to connect various dots on whiteboards, corkboards... anything, really. A cup of coffee (it's always fresh, no matter when you drop in) s sitting next to him, or being held in his hand. Either way, it's not far away.]
